Abstract
This study was intended to find the incidence of abnormal E. E. G. findings and patterns among grand mal epileptics in Korea. Nine hundred and six cases (male 545 cases, female 361 cases) who were given the diagnosis of grand mal epilepsy and treated from Jan. 1965 to May. 1972 at the Neuropsychiatry Department of Korea University Medical College Woo Sok Hospital were selected.
And those epileptics who showed the evidences of such as brain injury, brain tumor, cerebral degenerative disease, endocrine disorders and other cerebral and systemic diseases which supposed to give influences to cerebral functioning were excluded from this study.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Out of 906 cases of these epileptics 75. 8% were distributed under the age of 30 years old.
2. Abnormal E. E. G. findings were elicited in 48.2% of all cases. The age group between 0 to 4 years
old was 24.6%, 5 to 19 years old was 67. 0% and above 20 years old group was slightly over 30%. 3. In the proportion of wave patterns of abnormal E. E. G. paroxysmal slow wave was 76.2%,
generalized slow wave was 9.4%, spike and wave complex was 7.3% and mixed form was 4.3%. 4. As to the distribution of localization of abnormal E. E. G. according to the age groups, generalized
pattern occupied 62. 5% in the group of under 4 years old and in the other age groups localized
pattern occupied slightly over 60%.
5. In the proportion of symmetricity according to the age groups, all of the age groups showed high incidece of symmetricity except in the age group between 5 to 9 and 55 to 59 years old.
